The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, participated in the High-level Conference on Strengthening International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation and Building Agile Border Security Mechanisms, held on 4-5 November in Kuwait.
On 21 October 2024, the African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat and the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres convened the Eighth African Union-United Nations Annual Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They noted with deep concern the current state of peace and security globally, including armed conflicts and humanitarian crises, and in some cases profound disregard for international law and the shared principles of the two organizations.
In a spirit of listening and dialogue, over 150 representatives of more than 30 countries and international organizations met in Berlin on July 16th, 2024, for the Alliance's 5th General Assembly. The meeting was also attended by Sahelian Authorities.

President Touray received a delegation from the Coalition for the Sahel led by their High Representative, Mr. Hamadi Meimou. He assured the High Representative of the full support of the Commission in the execution of his mandate while noting that insecurity, climate change and unconstitutional change of government form the biggest challenges to peace and prosperity in the Sahel. He spoke of ECOWAS’ efforts to address these challenges by working with partners to restate commitment to democratic values and apply sanctions to dissuade illegal takeovers.
