OECD – Africa’s Urbanisation Dynamics 2025
23 April 2025
The publication African Urbanization Dynamics 2025 provides the most comprehensive overview to date of urbanization trends across the continent, covering demographic growth and spatial expansion in over 11,000 urban areas across Africa’s 54 countries. By 2050, Africa’s urban population is expected to double, reaching 1.4 billion and making the continent the second most urbanized in the world after Asia. The report explores the implications of this rapid growth on urban planning, governance, and financing, offering in-depth analysis, projections, and practical recommendations. It highlights that this urban transition is both a major challenge and a unique opportunity for transformation.
